In these times, when developers seem to care more about political ideology than gameplay, and when realistic graphics get pushed to the absurd extreme, many gamers begun to realize that oldies are indeed goldies and that nostalgia is more tangible than ever. It's no wonder why Nintendo started capitalizing on it with the release of the Mini NES and SuperNES series. But if you lack the necessary finances, you can always take the semi-bootleg path of an emulator and classic ROMs.

SuperRetro16 is an apt emulator of games that hit the Super Nintendo Entertainment System back in its heyday. Seriously, even though it runs on Android, you can emulate any ROM file that you can produce from the vast Internet. The only exceptions are the multiple-file builds. SuperRetro16 can't read those, unfortunately.

Installing a SNES game is easy. You just need to copy the ROM file or the zip archive to your device. SuperRetro16 is already associated with the relevant file types and will pop-up as an option whenever you try to open your game file. Alternatively, you can select to scan for ROMs from inside the app. This option seems to be nowhere to be found on my device, but as a workaround, as soon as you create a save file, SuperRetro will automatically add it to the collection screen.

I found the emulation quality to be outstanding. Animations work well, and framerates seem consistent. The controls are scattered about the screen, and cannot be edited, unfortunately. However, with a fixed donation, you can unlock custom control schemes, as well as get unlimited save slots, whereas normally you're limited to five.

Final Thoughts

If I didn't already own a MiniSNES, I would gladly go for the commercial version of SuperRetro16. There are plenty of hit titles on the SNES that deserve to be discovered by the new generations, and SuperRetro16 can handle them.
